We had a 4-night stay in Taormina on Sicily's east coast from 3 June, visiting nearby coastal areas, the Mt Etna volcano and a spectacular gorge during our time there.
TAORMINA (elevation 204m)
Main street (Corso Umberto) that winds through a tangle of narrow medieval streets:
The Greek Theatre (teatro greco), which dates from the 3rd century BC:
Toarmina from the theatre:
View of the southern edge of Taormina with Mt Etna in the distance:
View of Taormina from Castelmola (529m elevation) in the hills behind:
View of coast to the south from Castelmola
The coast to the north from Taormina:
Isola Bella, on the coast directly below Taormina (we took the bus down, on a winding road, & caught the cable car back):
The lovely old Taormina-Giardini railway station, said to be one of the most attractive in Italy:
MT ETNA
We took a day trip by bus from Taormina to the Mt Etna volcano.
On the chairlift above Rifugio Sapienza (2,000m elevation) - the chairlift goes to 2,500m, following which FWD buses operate; guides then take tourists to the south crater on foot:
At Mt Etna's south crater, about 2900m elevation (Mt Etna's highest point is 3,330m):
ALCANTARA GORGE:
We visited the Alcantara Valley on the way back from Mt Etna.
A deep gorge has been formed by the river eroding lava:
The river erosion has left basalt columns in the rock face:
