2. Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi Coast & Salerno

SORRENTO

We travelled to Sorrento on 29 May after leaving Florence.  We visited the Isle of Capri on a day trip from Sorrento and then the Amalfi coast for a few days, before catching a train from Salerno to Taormina in Sicily on 3 June.

Sorrento Harbour:

Sorrento's normally busy tourist shopping street, quiet early in the day:

The park near our hotel:

Lemons grown on the Sorrento peninsular are huge - those are oranges are on the right:

ISLE OF CAPRI

High cliffs on the north east side of the island:

Marina Piccola, on the southern coast:

Views of the sea stacks near Marina Piccola, at different times of the day:

The beach at Marina Piccolo:

Boats waiting for their turn to enter the Blue Grotto (only small boats can enter):

Blue, so blue - looking towards the small entrance to the cave, from inside:

Capri port (Marina Grande) & village on the north coast, taken from Anacapri:

The view from the village of Capri:

A piazza in Capri village:

View of some Sorrento hotels high above the harbour, on the return from Capri by boat:

AMALFI COAST

View from our lunch table after arriving at Atrani village (near Amalfi, but far quieter):

Atrani beach:

Entrance to our B&B at Atrani:

Atrani village from further up the valley (from our walk up to the village of Ravello):

Different views of the beach at Amalfi:

Spectacular backdrop to Amalfi:

The top of the Amalfi cathedral gleaming in the late afternoon sun:

Looking up the narrow valley behind Amalfi village, in the late afternoon:

RAVELLO

Some of the numerous steps on our walk up from Atrani to Ravello (365m above sea level):

Ravello piazza, with church in the background:

A group of cyclists from a town south of Milan passed through while we were having lunch:

View from Ravello piazza to villages in the nearby hills:

The coastline to the south, from Ravello:

Villa Rufolo in Ravello - this restored medieval villa is famous for outdoor classical music concerts - the small amphitheatre has a view like that in the photo above:

View over a nearby church from Villa Rufolo:

One of the many sections of steep steps on the different route we took back from Ravello:

View over Castiglione beach near the end of the walk back to Atrani:

The last section of the path back to Atrani:

SALERNO

Folk dancing near the beach on Italy's Republic Day holiday:

In the Minerva gardens:

A large portico courtyard leads to the entrance to the Salerno Cathedral:

We stayed on boat in Salerno - the B&B room we originally booked was not available due to plumbing problems & other B&Bs were apparently sold out due to the Republic Day holiday:
